The Craft of Tanera Camans: Handmade Shinty Sticks

Tanera Camans is one of the few remaining traditional makers of shinty sticks (camans), ensuring that the craft continues in an era where mass production dominates many sports. Their sticks are known for their durability, craftsmanship, and ability to be customized to a player’s needs.

1. The Caman-Making Process

Step 1: Selecting the Wood

• Tanera Camans primarily uses hickory wood, which has been the preferred material for centuries due to its strength, flexibility, and ability to absorb impact.

• The wood is carefully chosen to ensure it is free of major defects like knots or cracks, which could weaken the stick.

• The raw material (batten) is then ripped into laminates which makes up the structure of the stick.

Step 2: The Bending Process

• One of the most distinctive features of a shinty stick is its curved head. This is achieved through:

• Soaking or steaming the wood to make it pliable.

• Carefully bending the head to the desired shape and allowing it to set.

• The shape of the head can be customized based on a player’s preference, with some preferring a larger head for better ball control, but this legally must pass through a 2½ ring.

Step 3: Cutting and Shaping

• Once all the laminates are glued in the form, the stick is then removed and shaped into the basic form of a caman.

• The shaft (handle) and head (striking end) are carefully carved to create a smooth transition between the two.

Step 4: Sanding and Finishing

• After cutting, the caman is planned and shaped then sanded to remove rough edges.

• A protective finish, such as varnish or linseed oil, is applied to increase durability and protect against moisture.

• Decals, grip and tape are then added, the sticks are then ready to be sent out to customers all over Scotland and abroad.
